Claude Karfiol (b. 1954) is a Swiss artist whose roots lie in theater. In the 1980s, his experimental performance works placed him at the forefront of the Swiss avant-garde. He has since turned exclusively to painting.

When Covid lockdowns cut him off from his studio in 2020, Karfiol, with no prior digital experience, began sketching at home using nothing but a computer mouse in Word documents. What started as an improvisation evolved into an entirely new painting technique. Every subsequent work follows this same process: a hand-drawn mouse sketch in Microsoft Word, with no AI or digital aids, later translated into a one-of-a-kind physical painting through an elaborate mixed-media process on canvas.

Karfiol had painted intensively alongside his performance work in the 1980s, but only returned to painting seriously just before the pandemic. His technique quickly earned him a devoted following among collectors, though he never sought entry into the formal art market. Having followed this body of work closely from its early stages, ARTMARATHON has encouraged him to share it more widely, culminating in this project with LITO. With over 600 paintings to date, it is considered an outstanding achievement in contemporary art.
