Douglas Gordon - Portrait of a Self Portrait of a Self, as Marilyno
LITO Editions
Limited Edition of 35
Collaborating with Douglas Gordon is by itself, an extraordinary experience. The sulfurous Scottish artist entrusted LITO Editions with four new artworks from its most emblematic series, the Self Portraits. He challenged us to transpose not only the relief of his peculiar liquids and odd molten mixtures but also to recreate the very texture of burnt paper. The challenge has been brilliantly met. The artist or sorcerer, invited us to celebrate the prowess during the signature of the limited editions in a quasi-shamanic dancing performance in his studio in Berlin. The pulse, the immediacy, the sulphur as well as the tension fully vibrate throughout this mesmerizing and fundamental print.
Celebrity amongst the celebrities, Douglas Gordon summons Marilyn Monroe and re-appropriates the portrait that the king of Pop Art, Andy Warhol, has made iconic. The consumed and burn-out persona, is placed in front of a mirror of which the holes allow one’s reflection. This strange mise-en-abîme is the ultimate vanitas. A sublime and dark artwork that questions our relation to image, to its purity and to its consumption, time after time, era after era.
